Bowen Therapy is a gentle cross-fibre muscle release technique that can address muscle, tendon, fascia and nerve injuries. These include acute sports injuries and conditions of an organic or chronic nature.
The technique uses a series of rolling movements over important tension points throughout the body. Bowen techniques are not massage techniques and differ from most forms of hands on therapy by allowing two to five minute breaks between groups of muscle releases to allow the body time to make the needed adjustments to reset and heal itself.
Bowen techniques are designed to heavily influence superficial and deep fascia which is a major transport system of vibration throughout the body. This vibration allows specific communication to occur throughout the body allowing regions in pain or dysfunction to communicate better with the rest of the body and heal.
Bowen Therapy is renowned for its consistent ability to produce a parasympathetic state in the body. This is the 'rest and relaxation' mode the nervous system goes into for deep healing to occur. It is a healing state, and exactly what the body needs when experiencing prolonged levels of stress, pain, low energy or trauma.
Bowen Therapy treatments have long term benefits so long as the injury or pain is not re-aggravated. Eighty percent of cases treated with Bowen Therapy are significantly better or resolved within 4 treatments.
Bowen Technique facilitates the nervous system to reset resting muscle length and tensions on all sides of a joint making it very effective for muscular-skeletal problems, including ankle, knee, pelvic, lower back and neck pain. Other problems addressed by the Bowen Technique include:
Nerve problems in the legs or arms
TMJ issues (Temporomandibular joint)
Repetitive stress injury (RSI)
SIJ dysfunction (Sacroiliac Joint)
Dental or Facial pain
Many muscle or joint pains of unknown origin
Emotional stress and anxiety
Coccyx (tail bone) injuries
A Bowen Therapy treatment involves the client either laying or sitting on a treatment table and can be performed through light clothing. Sessions are generally an hour. It is usually recommended to have three to four sessions of the Bowen Technique with a break of five to ten days between each session.
